The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has regained control of its official X account, @DHQNigeria, after the platform was compromised in an unauthorised cyberattack.
The military confirmed the recovery on Monday in a brief post on the account, simply stating, “WE’RE BACK,” and thanking the public for its patience and continued support.
The recovery comes after DHQ announced on Saturday that the account had been compromised and warned Nigerians to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content posted from the handle during the breach.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity matter and that technical measures had been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
DHQ had also directed members of the public to rely on its verified Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp channels for official information while efforts were underway to restore control of the X account.
The account was reportedly used to publish unauthorised cryptocurrency-related content during the breach, prompting the military to caution the public against treating such posts as official communications.
With the recovery, DHQ has restored one of its major channels for communicating directly with Nigerians on matters concerning the Armed Forces.
The military has not disclosed who was behind the breach or how the attackers gained unauthorised access to the account, while the incident remains under investigation as a cybersecurity matter.
