The Nigeria Football Federation has directed the entire technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down from their positions with immediate effect.

The decision was announced by the NFF Executive Committee on Monday evening, August 17, following Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the team’s failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The federation did not give a specific reason for the decision in its brief announcement.

The Super Falcons, who entered the tournament as defending champions, suffered a 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals, their earliest exit from the competition in the tournament’s history.

Nigeria were subsequently given another opportunity to secure a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup through the qualification play-off but lost 2–1 to South Africa.

The result means Nigeria, who had qualified for every previous edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, must now pursue another route to the 2027 tournament.

The technical team was led by head coach Justin Madugu, who had previously apologised to Nigerians and accepted responsibility for the team’s failure to qualify directly for the World Cup.

The NFF had earlier set up a fact-finding committee to examine the team’s performance and determine what went wrong during the campaign.

The latest decision now brings Madugu’s tenure and that of the other members of the technical crew to an immediate end.

The federation has not yet announced who will take charge of the Super Falcons or when a new technical team will be appointed.

The decision comes only days after the NFF apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians over the team’s failure to secure direct World Cup qualification.

Nigeria’s next steps will now centre on appointing a new technical structure and preparing the Super Falcons for the remaining qualification route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
