A Nigerian national, Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, has been arrested in Vietnam in connection with a suspected cross-border drug trafficking operation involving about 2kg of crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin.

Vietnamese authorities said the drugs were discovered after customs officers detected suspicious images while scanning a consignment entering the country from Laos through the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province.

The discovery was made at about 8:30 p.m. on August 5, when officers inspecting vehicles arriving from Laos identified a suspicious package.

A physical examination of the consignment reportedly revealed that the suspected drugs had been concealed inside electric water heaters and electronic components, which were being used to disguise the shipment.

Following the discovery, customs officials launched an investigation with the drug-related crimes investigation police, anti-smuggling investigators and border guards to identify the intended recipient of the package.

After tracing the consignment through several locations, investigators arrested Odionye, who was born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City while he was receiving the package.

Authorities said the suspect admitted that the package contained drugs.

During questioning, Odionye reportedly told investigators that he had been hired to receive the consignment in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it to Hanoi.

The authorities have since expanded the investigation to establish who else may have been involved in the suspected trafficking operation.

The case involves suspected trafficking across the Laos-Vietnam border, with investigators now working to determine the wider network behind the shipment.

Vietnamese authorities have not indicated that the investigation has been concluded, and the allegations against the Nigerian suspect remain subject to the ongoing legal process.

The arrest comes as Vietnamese authorities continue efforts to disrupt international drug trafficking networks operating through the country’s borders.
