A minor fire triggered by an electrical fault at an Abuja-Kaduna train station has been contained, while the Nigerian Railway Corporation says train operations remain unaffected and scheduled services will continue as normal.

The agency said the temporary arrangements were aimed at providing “seamless, safe, and efficient” transportation amid the expected surge in passenger traffic.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Thursday reported a “minor” fire outbreak at the Idu Train Station, Abuja, caused by an electrical fault.

A statement by the Corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, noted that the minor fire incident occurred in the station’s low-voltage electrical room on Wednesday evening.

The fire was discovered at about 8:30 p.m. and was promptly brought under control by maintenance personnel.

Preliminary inspection showed that some electrical supply cables connected to the control panels were damaged.

The Corporation noted that the alternative (solar) power system was not affected. Power has also been temporarily restored to the lifts and escalators, with 28 out of 29 currently operational.

According to NRC, the incident does not affect Abuja–Kaduna Train Service operations, saying that scheduled train services will continue as normal.

It added that the technical team is conducting further assessment to determine the cause of the fault and permanently restore the affected installations.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has also been informed for necessary technical support and intervention.
