When Kano moves, the political landscape takes notice. At the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential re-election campaign for 2027, held in Kaduna State on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Kano stole the show with a massive turnout of party supporters whose enthusiasm and unmistakable chant of “Abba Gida Gida!” dominated the political atmosphere. The occasion became even more significant when the APC National Chairman presented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf with the party’s governorship flag, formally signalling the party’s endorsement of his candidacy for the 2027 Kano State governorship election.

Airtel Tenancy

It was a powerful convergence of political recognition, grassroots mobilisation and renewed confidence in a governor increasingly positioned at the centre of the APC’s electoral calculations in Kano and its wider campaign to secure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

The massive Kano contingent transformed the rally into a remarkable demonstration of political strength. The repeated chant of “Abba Gida Gida!” reverberated through the gathering, projecting Governor Yusuf’s popularity among his supporters and drawing attention to Kano’s strategic importance. In an event hosted by Kaduna, the energy and numerical strength of the visiting Kano supporters appeared to overshadow the hosts, creating the impression that Kaduna had provided the venue while Kano supplied much of the spectacle.

Beyond the excitement, the gathering carried a profound political message: Governor Yusuf has emerged as a central figure in the APC’s evolving political configuration in Kano, with the capacity to mobilise supporters and bring different political interests together under one umbrella.

The presentation of the APC governorship flag added substance to the spectacle. In the presence of President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the party’s National Chairman, APC governors and other prominent political leaders, Governor Yusuf received formal recognition as the party’s candidate for Kano in the 2027 governorship election. The moment strengthened his political standing within the party and positioned Kano prominently in the APC’s preparations for the forthcoming polls.

For Governor Yusuf, the flag represents more than a party symbol. It carries the weight of political responsibility, the expectation of party members and the challenge of consolidating a broad coalition capable of sustaining the APC’s ambitions in Kano. His emergence as the party’s governorship candidate also provides a focal point around which supporters, stakeholders and grassroots structures can organise.

His defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC has introduced a new dimension into Kano’s political landscape. What was once a major political transition is now creating opportunities for consolidation, reconciliation and the expansion of the APC’s political base. The Kaduna rally offered a visible illustration of how the governor’s leadership is becoming central to this process.

In politics, the ability to bring people together is a significant measure of leadership. A leader’s influence is reflected not only in official authority but also in the willingness of supporters to identify with a common cause and demonstrate their commitment beyond familiar territory. The massive Kano turnout in Kaduna provided a compelling picture of that capacity.

The prominence of the “Abba Gida Gida!” chant was particularly striking. The slogan has become closely associated with Governor Yusuf’s political identity, and its repeated appearance at the rally projected a strong connection between the governor and his supporters. Its resonance beyond Kano also offered a reminder that the state’s political energy can extend into the wider national arena.

Yet the significance of the rally goes beyond the governor’s personal following. It lies in the opportunity to transform that enthusiasm into a united APC capable of competing effectively in 2027. By bringing different political constituencies together, Governor Yusuf can help build a party whose strength rests on cooperation, shared purpose and effective grassroots organisation.

The governor has already charged members of the Kano State Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council to intensify grassroots mobilisation and work towards making Kano the state with the highest number of votes for President Tinubu in the forthcoming presidential election. This directive reflects the central role he intends Kano to play in the APC’s national electoral strategy.

His message to campaign officials has also emphasised the importance of communicating the achievements and programmes of APC administrations rather than engaging in personal attacks. By urging discipline, unity and constructive political engagement, the governor has pointed towards a campaign approach that seeks to win public confidence through persuasion and a clear presentation of the party’s record.

This approach places Governor Yusuf in a potentially influential position as a leading campaign mobiliser for President Tinubu in Kano. As the state’s chief executive and the APC’s governorship candidate, he occupies a strategic position from which he can coordinate party stakeholders, strengthen grassroots engagement and encourage supporters to participate actively in the campaign.

Kano’s importance in this undertaking cannot be overstated. With its large voting population, influential political networks and history of vigorous electoral participation, the state is a major factor in national electoral calculations. A united and effectively organised APC in Kano could make a substantial contribution to the party’s national ambitions.

President Tinubu, in his remarks at the rally, commended governors across the country for the developmental strides recorded in their respective states, recognising their contributions to governance and development. The presence of the President and Vice President at the campaign flag-off, alongside the formal presentation of the governorship flag to Yusuf, placed the Kano governor within the wider framework of the party’s preparations for 2027.

For the APC, the combination of presidential endorsement, governorship candidacy and grassroots mobilisation presents an opportunity to strengthen its political structure in Kano. The governor’s challenge will be to sustain the enthusiasm demonstrated in Kaduna, maintain unity among party members and translate the mobilisation into effective engagement with voters across the state.

Political unity is rarely achieved by declarations alone. It requires the patience to reconcile differences, the wisdom to accommodate competing interests and the determination to ensure that all members have a stake in the party’s future. Governor Yusuf’s leadership will be important in bringing longstanding APC members and those who have joined the party under his leadership into a common political enterprise.

The Kaduna rally has provided a powerful image of what such unity can achieve. Supporters gathered under one banner, expressed their enthusiasm and projected confidence in the governor’s leadership. The next task is to make that spirit enduring through active party structures, sustained consultation and a common electoral vision.

For Governor Yusuf, the opportunity is considerable. His receipt of the governorship flag affirms his place in the APC’s plans for Kano, while the massive turnout of his supporters demonstrates the mobilisation potential available to the party. His ability to combine these advantages with inclusive leadership and effective governance could prove consequential as the 2027 elections approach.

The rally also reinforced the connection between Kano’s political future and President Tinubu’s re-election ambition. By positioning Kano as a major centre of APC mobilisation, Governor Yusuf has an opportunity to demonstrate that the state can be a strong pillar of the party’s national campaign.

Ultimately, the significance of the Kaduna gathering lies in the convergence of three powerful developments: Governor Yusuf’s formal recognition as the APC’s governorship candidate, the massive mobilisation of Kano supporters and the renewed opportunity to unite the party behind President Tinubu’s 2027 ambition.

The governor now has the responsibility to turn these advantages into sustained political momentum. The enthusiasm of the crowd must be matched by effective organisation, the symbolism of the flag must be reinforced by purposeful leadership, and the unity displayed at the rally must translate into a coherent campaign across Kano.

When Kano moves as one, its political voice becomes difficult to ignore. In Kaduna, that voice carried the unmistakable rhythm of “Abba Gida Gida!” The presentation of the APC governorship flag gave that moment additional significance, projecting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a central figure in the party’s political future in Kano and a key mobilising force in its preparations for 2027.

Kano stole the show in Kaduna, Abba Yusuf received the flag, and the APC gained a powerful opportunity to consolidate its political strength. The journey to 2027 has begun, and the governor’s challenge is to transform the energy of the moment into a united movement capable of delivering victory for the party and President Tinubu.
