Just about a year ago, Fatima Oloko was watching matches from the bench as an unused goalkeeper at Rivers Angels in the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL).
But fast forward to July 2026: she’s the only player in Nigeria’s contingent to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) flying the NWFL flag as the Super Falcons seek a record-extending 11th crown.
Her meteoric rise is a story of resilience, the stuff of history books. Frustrated by a lack of action with Rivers Angels, the 18-year-old switched to Abia Angels ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.
Twelve months later, the gamble paid off handsomely for the Cross River-born goalkeeper.
Oloko won the NWFL Goalkeeper of the Season, picking up the highly coveted Golden Glove award after helping Abia Angels to a historic Super Six finish.
Reflecting on her journey, the goalkeeper described her story as a testament to persistence and faith.
“If someone told me that I would be awarded the NWFL best goalkeeper of this season, I would deny it because I know how it started,” she said after being presented with the prize at the end of the 2025/26 NWFL Super Six in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
“It never started in a good way, but God was with me. In all you do, don’t give up. I can remember last season, I sat on the bench all through the season. Believe in everything you believe in because God will answer.”
She kept 12 clean sheets in the regular season as Abia Angels qualified for the Super Six, the first in the club’s history, even though they did not win the competition.
Born on February 2, 2008, the six-foot-tall Oloko is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Nigerian women’s football. Her quick reflexes, imposing presence, and agility earned her plaudits from pundits and fans alike.
These exceptional outings got her a maiden call-up to the Super Falcons back in late February for Nigeria’s double-header friendly with the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon.
That first taste of the national team experience was the start of her journey with the Super Falcons.
When Super Falcons Head Coach Justin Madugu released his squad for this year’s WAFCON, Oloko’s name featured prominently as one of the three goalkeepers heading to Morocco — a remarkable inclusion in a roster heavily dominated by overseas-based stars.
Her inclusion marks the first-ever WAFCON invitation for the Abia Angels goalkeeper, a testament to her growth and consistency.
Taking to her social media handles, the excited former Abia Angels player expressed gratitude to God over the WAFCON invitation and wrote, “Thank you, Lord Jesus. My first of many to come.”

From not having playing time just 12 months ago in the NWFL, the 18-year-old now has the opportunity to share the locker room with some of the biggest stars and represent Nigeria at the grandest stage of African women’s football.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of her inclusion in the Super Falcons’ team is an opportunity to train alongside Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and also learn from the Brighton player who is her idol.
After her first training session with Nnadozie during her maiden call-up, Oloko could not hide her admiration for the highly rated Nigerian goalkeeper.
“It was an honour to finally meet you—not just to meet you, but also to have the privilege to train with you. Thank you so much; this means a lot to me,” the Abia Angels player wrote on her social media platforms about Nnadozie, who has won the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for three consecutive years (2023, 2024, and 2025).
