The state government has summoned the contractors to identify the bottlenecks stalling progress, with the uncompleted 2km road projects across all three senatorial zones facing immediate revocation in line with a directive from the State Executive Council (EXCO).

The Ebonyi State Government has initiated steps to terminate contracts awarded for the construction of 2-kilometre rural road projects across the state following prolonged delays in their execution.

​The Commissioner for Special Projects, Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu, disclosed this on Monday while addressing journalists in Abakaliki after a meeting with the affected contractors.

​She explained that the government summoned the contractors to identify the bottlenecks stalling progress, adding that uncompleted 2km road projects in all three senatorial zones face immediate revocation in line with a directive from the State Executive Council (EXCO).

​“The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that jobs awarded to contractors are executed and completed on time. Over time, many of them failed to deliver,” Obichukwu stated.

“There is an ongoing termination process for these projects. As a ministry, we are determined to ensure every project assigned in Ebonyi State is completed on schedule.”

​Obichukwu commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for initiating the rural infrastructure drive, noting that the short-term road interventions were specifically designed to open up agrarian communities, facilitate agricultural transport, and boost local economies.

​“Our governor initiated these projects to drive rural development. While some state initiatives are long-term, these rural roads were meant to be completed within a short window,” she said.

“In areas where work has progressed, living conditions have improved, electricity is being integrated, and farmers can now move their produce to urban markets with ease.”

​The commissioner added that the interface allowed contractors to air technical challenges, including terrain difficulties and payment certification delays.

She assured that the Ministry of Special Projects will step up monitoring to guarantee value for money and strict adherence to project timelines.

​The meeting follows recent decisions reached during the Ebonyi State Executive Council meeting, where members expressed strong dissatisfaction with the pace of rural road construction.

​Consequently, EXCO mandated the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to conclude formal termination proceedings for all uncompleted 2km road contracts.

​To prevent further delays, the council constituted Special EXCO Committees across the state’s 13 Local Government Areas to oversee and ensure the completion of the affected roads before September 2026.

Obichukwu was also directed to take a comprehensive inventory of all affected sites for immediate administrative takeover.
