The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed ₦50 million worth of relief materials to victims of bandit attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. According to the Commission, the package includes 600 bundles of roofing sheets, 1,000 bags of cement, 60 bags of wood nails and 300 packs of roofing nails to support affected families in rebuilding their homes.

The National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed building materials worth over ₦50 million to victims of bandit attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State as part of efforts to support affected communities.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Borgu, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Abubakar Yelwa, said the intervention was in response to requests from victims whose homes were destroyed during the attacks.

According to a statement issued by the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Affairs, Tanko Nura, the relief materials include 600 bundles of roofing sheets, 1,000 bags of cement, 60 bags of wood nails and 300 packs of roofing nails to assist victims in rebuilding their homes.

Yelwa expressed sympathy to the affected families and commended the Niger State Government under Governor Umaru Bago for its continuous support and interventions aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

He also cautioned residents, particularly those living in riverine and flood-prone communities, to take proactive measures against the predicted heavy rainfall by clearing drainage channels rather than waiting for government intervention, in order to minimise the risk of flooding.

The Managing Director further announced that the Commission had provided a 35-passenger boat to serve residents of Musawa community in Borgu Local Government Area. He urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the facility, avoid overloading, refrain from using unsafe canoes and comply with water transportation safety regulations to prevent accidents.

Yelwa thanked the Emir of Borgu,  Haliru Jikantoro-Kitoro II, for his support in the successful implementation of N-HYPPADEC’s programmes, including its orthopedic medical outreach in the emirate.

He also disclosed that the ongoing construction of 22 housing units for victims in Fakun community has been expanded with an additional five units, bringing the total number of houses under the project to 27.

In his remarks, the Emir of Borgu, Haliru Jikantoro-Kitoro II, commended the Commission for responding to the needs of victims of banditry and other vulnerable communities across the emirate.

The traditional ruler also urged youths to refrain from spreading misinformation and inflammatory content on social media, noting that such actions could worsen the security situation in the area.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area, Mohammed Abdullahi, appreciated N-HYPPADEC for its numerous development projects and interventions in the council and assured the Commission of the local government’s support to ensure the transparent and seamless distribution of the relief materials to deserving beneficiaries.
