The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the demolition of an illegal settlement known as Ruga, located near Karmajiji in the Kukwaba District of Abuja, over concerns that it serves as a hideout for criminal elements.
Wike issued the directive on Friday after leading a team of security operatives to the settlement following a meeting of the FCT Security Committee.
The minister said the move forms part of ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to enhance security and rid the nation’s capital of criminal enclaves.
According to him, intelligence reports revealed that suspected criminals often retreat to the settlement after carrying out attacks in different parts of the territory.
Expressing concern over the nature of the settlement, Wike said the identities of many of its occupants could not be easily verified, making it difficult for security agencies to effectively monitor activities in the area.
“Look at the area. You don’t even know who the occupants are. How do you identify them? How do you know where to locate them? And this is inside the city,” he said.
Describing the settlement as a security risk, the minister added: “This is a time bomb. There’s no way we can allow this. The FCT Administration will not allow criminal hideouts to thrive in Abuja.”
Wike subsequently directed the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, to collaborate with the Department of Development Control to ensure the immediate demolition of the settlement.
He warned that individuals found using such locations to facilitate criminal activities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The minister noted that the operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks, improving public safety and protecting residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to sustaining security operations across Abuja, stressing that safeguarding lives and property remains a top priority of the FCT Administration.
