The Kano State Government has commenced efforts to reclaim land belonging to Government Girls College from alleged encroachers, reaffirming its commitment to protecting one of the state’s oldest institutions dedicated to girls’ education.

The Kano State Government has begun efforts to reclaim portions of land belonging to Government Girls College, formerly known as Women Teachers College, following concerns over alleged encroachment on the institution’s property.
The move was announced during an inspection and enforcement visit to the school by the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Abduljabbar Umar, accompanied by officials of the Kano State Geographic Information System (KANGIS) and other stakeholders.
During the exercise, officials identified and sealed off areas said to have been encroached upon by land grabbers. Umar assured that all illegally occupied portions of the school’s land would be recovered and restored to the institution, which was established in 1947.
Several residential buildings were found on the disputed land, with some completed and others still under construction. Members of the enforcement team marked the affected structures for possible demolition, stressing that the government would not condone illegal occupation of public land.
Speaking during the inspection, Umar said the operation was necessary to safeguard public assets and warned that those involved in land grabbing would face legal consequences.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to recovering all encroached land belonging to the college.
Also speaking, the Director-General of KANGIS, Dalhatu Sani, and the Principal of Government Girls College, Uwana Balarabe, expressed optimism that the recovery exercise would help preserve the institution’s legacy and create additional space for educational development.
Government Girls College, formerly Women Teachers College, is one of Kano State’s oldest educational institutions and has played a significant role in girls’ education for decades.
According to the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, the state government has, since the inception of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, sealed more than 300 properties as part of efforts to ensure proper land documentation, enforce planning regulations and recover public land from illegal occupation.
