Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has urged the Nigerian Army to take decisive action against illegal miners regardless of their identity or connections, saying the law should apply equally. He also called for improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration among neighbouring states to tackle the growing menace of illegal mining.

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has directed security agencies to take decisive action against anyone involved in illegal mining, warning that the activity is fueling insecurity across the state.
Governor Mohammed made the call while receiving the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana, during a courtesy visit at the Government House.
The governor expressed concern over the increasing activities of illegal miners, stressing the need for stronger intelligence gathering and greater collaboration among neighbouring states to curb the problem.
“I want you to intensify your intelligence. Don’t spare anybody. Even if my son is involved in illegal mining, deal with him decisively,” the governor said.”
Governor Mohammed noted that the state is facing challenges from some influential individuals and stakeholders who are allegedly involved in illegal mining because of its huge financial benefits. He assured the GOC of the Bauchi State Government’s continued support for the military in its efforts to improve security.
“We are going to purchase vehicles very soon. The Federal Government has given each state governor three billion naira, and we intend to use it properly for security. We are not going to use it for any other purpose,” he added.
Speaking during the visit, Major General Maxwell Dangana said he was on a tour of formations and units under his command to assess the security situation and review existing operational strategies.
He appealed to the governor for continued support in addressing operational challenges facing troops, particularly in parts of Alkaleri Local Government Area. He identified poor road infrastructure as a major challenge affecting the movement of troops and emergency response times.
In response, Governor Mohammed said the road leading to Mansur, one of the state’s troubled communities, has already been awarded for construction.
He also urged the Nigerian Army to establish additional formations in other strategic locations, including communities around Azare and Tafawa Balewa, to further strengthen security across Bauchi State.
