Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has commissioned the first general hospital in Zango, marking a major healthcare milestone after the facility was upgraded from a comprehensive health centre to improve access to secondary medical services.

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, on Thursday commissioned the first-ever General Hospital in Zango Local Government Area, describing the landmark project as a major milestone in his administration’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare to every community across the state.

The newly commissioned facility, upgraded from a comprehensive health centre, is the first general hospital in the history of Zango, ending decades of dependence on distant health facilities for secondary medical care.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Radda said the hospital would provide residents with access to modern medical and surgical services without the burden of travelling long distances.

“For the first time in the history of this local government, our people will access quality secondary healthcare without travelling long distances,” the governor said.

He said the hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment equipment capable of providing comprehensive healthcare services, reaffirming that healthcare remains one of the pillars of his administration’s development agenda.

Governor Radda revealed that in the last three years, his administration has upgraded four health facilities in Kafur, Charanchi, Zango and Dandume to General Hospitals, while similar upgrades in Mai’adua and Faskari are nearing completion.

He added that reconstruction work is ongoing at General Hospital Daura, while General Hospitals in Kankara and Mani are undergoing extensive renovation to improve service delivery.

The governor highlighted major investments in specialist healthcare, including the renovation of operating theatres at General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital (GARSH), Turai Yar’adua Maternal and Children Hospital, and General Hospital Katsina.

According to him, the state has established a modern 16-bed Dialysis Centre—described as one of the most advanced in North-West Nigeria—while construction of an ultra-modern Ophthalmology Division is progressing at GARSH.

He disclosed that more than 280 Primary and Comprehensive Healthcare Centres have been renovated across Katsina State, alongside the installation of solar power systems at General Hospitals in Katsina and Kankia to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

In a move aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare industry, Governor Radda announced plans to establish Katsina’s first pharmaceutical manufacturing centre for the production of drugs and medical consumables.

On healthcare workforce development, he said the administration has recruited 804 health professionals within three years and secured postgraduate residency accreditation for six specialist hospitals in Paediatrics, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Family Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He also approved funding for the accreditation of Dental Therapy Units in five General Hospitals to facilitate internship training.
