As Osun State prepares for its governorship election on Saturday, August 15, 2026, here are five key facts to know about the state.

1. Created in 1991.

Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. It was carved out of the old Oyo State, with Osogbo as its capital.

2. It is in Nigeria’s South-West.

Osun is one of the six states in the South-West geopolitical zone. It shares boundaries with Ekiti and Ondo states to the east, Kwara to the north, Ogun to the south and Oyo to the west.

3. Osun has 30 Local Government Areas.

The state is divided into 30 Local Government Areas and has three senatorial districts — Osun East, Osun Central and Osun West. Its capital, Osogbo, is also the location of the famous Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a major cultural and tourist site.

4. More than four million people live in Osun.

The Osun State Government puts the state’s population at about 4.7 million based on a 2016 estimate. The figure is an estimate rather than a recent national census count, so it should not be presented as Osun’s current population.

5. Ten people have served as governor since its creation.

Since the state’s creation in 1991, 10 people have served as governor or military administrator. They include Leo Segun Ajiborisha, Isiaka Adeleke, Anthony Udofia, Anthony Obi, Theophilus Bamigboye, Bisi Akande, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Rauf Aregbesola, Gboyega Oyetola and the incumbent, Ademola Adeleke.

Adeleke became the state’s sixth executive governor of the Fourth Republic when he was sworn in on November 27, 2022. He defeated then-incumbent Gboyega Oyetola in the 2022 governorship election.lection.
