Charlton Athletic have confirmed a man was found dead at their home ground, The Valley, with the club now assisting Metropolitan Police in their inquiries.
The discovery was made on Tuesday morning, though the incident is believed to have taken place in the early hours of Monday
. A male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the club has stressed there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on their part
In a statement, the League One side thanked staff for the professionalism shown while dealing with a difficult and distressing situation
Police enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death remain ongoing.
The tragedy comes just days after Charlton opened their Championship season with a 2-1 comeback win over Derby County, goals from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell securing the victory. The club are next in action away to West Ham United at the London Stadium.
