The Nigeria’s former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Japan, Prof Gana Isa has declared that it would take only a more committed and genuine patriotic leadership to restore security in the country.
Gana, on Wednesday, at a media parley in Ilorin, Kwara State, said the country needs a more serious leadership that would personalise insecurity and thus successfully tackle the menace.
He wondered about the effects of all the existing security agencies on the unending wars against kidnapings, bantry and general insecurity across the country.
The former commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Kwara State, called for supports for independent and regional security bodies, describing them as more formidable.
According to the former Deputy Speaker in the state: “Insecurity has consumed the entire country and our government is not serious about it, what we hear regularly is negotiation with the bandits. Banditry has become a trade with actors cashing in on it,” asking: “what has the federal government done/said about the killing of a serving Army General?
“We need a leadership that would be serious about tackling the insecurity menace; with all our security agencies in Nigeria, we cannot still poice our country,” he lamented.
He, however, rated forest guards, vigilantes and other private securities above the conventional military settings, saying: “the private security guards and forest guards are doing better than the conventional security outfits.
“Though, they have limitations like funds and equipment to work with, yet, they are willing to risk their lives. They need the lacking encouragement. The government is just not serious enough for the menace,” he insisted.
Gana observed that kidnappings and banditry were at lowest ebb during party primaries and elections in Nigeria, thereby urging Nigerians to look beyond rethorics.
“During parties primaries, there were no records of banditry or terrorism in any par of Nigeria, but they resurfaced afterwards. That suggests something that i may not be readily willing to say.
“Since the current administration does not know how to perform its constitutional duties that is to protect lives and properties, they should honourably quit the scene and allow more serious groups to mount the leadership,” he stated.
