The Senate has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to urgently investigate the killing of 113 persons, including six Mobile Police personnel, in Benue North-East Senatorial District.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende, APC, Benue North-East, over recurring attacks in Ukum, Katsina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas.

Presenting the motion, Sen. Udende told the Senate that the attacks have left a trail of deaths, destruction of property and displacement of residents.

He listed the incidents to include the killing of 24 persons at Sai in Katsina-Ala LGA, 63 persons in Bom and Aboajio villages in Ukum LGA, 15 persons including six Mobile Police officers at Ayilamo in Logo LGA and 11 persons at Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages in Ukum LGA on October 8, 2026.

According to him, the combined death toll from the four attacks stands at 113, with homes destroyed and economic activities, especially farming, disrupted.

The Senate condemned the killings and observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims, while commiserating with their families and the Nigeria Police Force over the loss of its personnel.

It also urged the IGP, the Chief of Army Staff and heads of other security and intelligence agencies to strengthen operations in the affected areas, establish early-warning and rapid-response mechanisms and ensure sustained protection of vulnerable communities.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, noted that the killing of armed security personnel in the attacks raises serious concern about the safety of unarmed communities.

‘If military personnel and other armed security officers are killed in these attacks, what happens to communities that have no means of defending themselves? We must bring this matter to the attention of the Service Chiefs so that they can take appropriate action to strengthen security in the affected areas’.
