A brace each from Uchenna Kanu and Toni Payne and another strike from Christy Ucheibe handed Nigeria’s Super Falcons a 5–0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.
The victory means the Super Falcons have reached the third round of the African qualifiers for the women’s football event of the Olympic Games with a 7-0 aggregate victory over the Southern Africans.
The Super Falcons dominated the game and took the lead in the 41st minute of the clash at the Remo Stars home ground in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Tuesday.
Kanu capitalised on a defensive mistake and squared the ball to Payne, who fired into the net. While the first half ended 1-0 in Nigeria’s favour, Kanu doubled the score for Nigeria with 58 minutes on the clock after heading home from a Folashade Ijamilusi Delivery
The Cruz Azul Femenil star thought she had gotten her second of the night three minutes later. However, her effort, again from an Ijamilusi cross, was ruled off for offside.
But in the 63rd minute, Payne scored her second for the night after forward Blessing Okpe dribbled past two Comoros defenders before finding the Inter Milan Femeni star, who finished with aplomb.
Kanu got her brace three minutes later after Ijamilusi delivered another inviting cross to the 29-year-old.
FC Dnepr Mogilev of Belarus’s Okpe, who had been a handful since her introduction in the second half, then won a penalty for Nigeria after being fouled in the box.
Christy Ucheibe coolly converted from the spot in the 71st minute to make it 5-0. Nigeria finished both legs with seven goals.
They will meet Morocco in the next round of qualifiers to be played early next year.
