Kwara doctors begin warning strike over salary dispute

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has suspended its three-day warning strike and directed members to resume duty, while insisting on urgent repairs to the hospital’s faulty electricity infrastructure.

The Association announced the suspension in a memo issued to members and made available to journalists in Ibadan yesterday.

The memo was jointly signed by the association’s President, Dr Uthman Adedeji, and General Secretary, Dr Mary Awodiji.
MEANWHILE, doctors employed by Kwara State Government have begun a seven-day warning strike over salary deductions and non-implementation of the 2025 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) in Kwara State, Dr Adeola Olasinde, announced this while addressing journalists in Ilorin.

It stated that the decision followed resolutions reached at an emergency general meeting held on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The Association, therefore, urged its members to return promptly to their respective duty posts, adding that further updates would be communicated to the congress within the stipulated timelines.

Olasinde said the doctors were protesting a two per cent deduction from their September salaries for the Kwara Care Health Insurance Scheme and the failure to implement the new salary structure.

He said the strike, which affects state-owned hospitals, including the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), followed unsuccessful efforts to resolve the issues through dialogue.

The warning strike is expected to end on October 22, 2026.

Reacting to the industrial action, the Medical Director of KWASUTH, Dr Ahmed Bola AbdulQadir, appealed to the striking doctors to return to work to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
