Bode Market Fire

An early morning fire outbreak has razed several shops at the popular Bode Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The fire was said to have broken out at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday, leaving many traders stranded and counting their losses.

The worst-hit area was the market’s herbal section, where traders lamented the destruction of goods, property, and livelihoods built over many years.

Eyewitnesses and victims said the inferno spread rapidly through several shops before firefighters arrived, consuming merchandise and other valuable items.

Many of the affected traders, visibly distressed, were seen assessing the extent of the damage, while others attempted to salvage whatever remained from their burnt shops.

The Babaloja General of Oyo State, Yekeen Abass, who led members of the market leadership on a sympathy visit to the scene, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident.

He assured the victims that efforts would be made to secure government intervention to help cushion the impact of the disaster.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, the Director of Operations, Ismael Adeleke, said the agency received a distress call at about 4:33 a.m.

Adeleke explained that firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene but that many of the affected shops had already been engulfed by the flames before they arrived.

According to him, firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.

The affected traders have appealed to the government for support to help them recover from the devastating losses.
