The Niger State Government has warned illegal miners to stop operating or face arrest and prosecution, reaffirming its commitment to sanitising the mining sector and enforcing compliance with mineral exploration and extraction laws.

The Niger State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals, groups and companies engaged in illegal mining activities across the state, directing them to halt operations immediately or face arrest and prosecution.
The Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammed Danjuma, gave the warning while reaffirming the government’s resolve to sanitise the mining sector and ensure strict compliance with existing laws and regulations governing mineral exploration and extraction.
Danjuma stated that no individual or organisation is permitted to engage in mining activities without obtaining the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities.
He described illegal mining as a major threat to the environment, public safety and the state’s economic development, noting that it also deprives government and host communities of legitimate revenue and other benefits associated with regulated mining operations.
According to the commissioner, the ministry has intensified surveillance and monitoring of mining sites across the state in collaboration with security agencies and regulatory bodies to identify and apprehend illegal operators.
He warned that anyone found carrying out mining activities without a valid licence or official authorisation would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The government will not tolerate activities that undermine efforts to regulate the mining sector and ensure its contribution to sustainable development,” he said.
Danjuma urged prospective miners and investors to follow due process by obtaining the required licences and permits before commencing operations.
He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to support the government’s efforts by reporting suspicious or illegal mining activities to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.
The commissioner reiterated the state’s commitment to developing a transparent, responsible and sustainable mining industry capable of attracting genuine investors, creating jobs and contributing significantly to economic growth.
He assured licensed operators of the government’s continued support in providing an enabling environment for legitimate mining activities, while maintaining strict adherence to environmental and regulatory standards.
Danjuma further stressed that the Ministry of Mineral Resources would continue to enforce all regulations guiding mining operations, warning that violators would face the full weight of the law.
