Cameroon have won their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after defeating debutants Malawi 3-0 in the final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday. The victory was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Indomitable Lionesses settled the final in a dominant first-half display, scoring all three goals before the interval.
Marie Ngah opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Naomi Ndjoah Eto doubled Cameroon’s advantage 10 minutes later, following an assist from Myriam Nyadjou.
Ngah completed her brace three minutes into first-half stoppage time, with Eto providing the assist, giving Cameroon a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Malawi, appearing at the WAFCON for the first time, were unable to find a way back into the contest after the interval as Cameroon maintained their advantage to secure the historic victory.
The triumph ends Cameroon’s long wait for the continental women’s title. The Indomitable Lionesses had previously reached three WAFCON finals — in 2004, 2014 and 2016 — but lost all three to Nigeria.
Cameroon’s victory also makes them the fourth different country to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, joining Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.
For Malawi, the defeat brings an end to an extraordinary debut campaign. The Scorchers had stunned defending champions Nigeria in the group stage before advancing through the knockout rounds and reaching their first WAFCON final. Their run also secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The result marks a historic night for Cameroon women’s football as the Indomitable Lionesses finally turn three previous final defeats into their maiden WAFCON crown.
