Tuesday’s assault adds to a grim pattern of violence that has gripped Mangu in recent days. Communities in the area, including Jwak Maitumbi, were previously attacked by a rampaging militia, with dozens of homes and large quantities of crops destroyed and residents reportedly gunned down before the attackers withdrew. The Sun Nigeria Analysts monitoring the violence have noted that the conflict in parts of Plateau has frequently followed a pattern of tit-for-tat attacks, in which violence against one community is met with retaliation against another, often triggering further deaths, displacement and destruction of property. Observers have also warned that a failure to identify and hold perpetrators accountable could deepen a sense of impunity in the area and heighten the risk that affected communities may be tempted to pursue retaliatory action of their own. The Sun Nigeria With the latest attack marking the third in Mangu in as little as a week, pressure is mounting on security agencies to explain the repeated breaches and to move swiftly to prevent further bloodshed in the area.
Authorities have yet to release an official update on casualty figures or the identity of the attackers as of the time of filing, and further details are expected to emerge as the situation develops.
This is heavy news to be processing back to back. If you need to step away for a bit, that’s alright too.
