Police in Anambra State have arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged killing of a student nurse, as investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Three months after her tragic death, the Police in Anambra State at the weekend disclosed that it has arrested the alleged killer of a 23-year-old nursing student, Vivian Chilaka.
Chilaka was murdered in cold blood at her residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state on June 14 this year. Her death had raised public concern with the manner in which she was strangled.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) for the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, said on Saturday that a 26-year-old Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe had been arrested in connection with her murder.
“The suspect was arrested on 4th September 2026 following credible and actionable information received by the Command.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly gained access to the building by climbing the fence with the aid of a ladder, with the initial intention of sexually assaulting the victim. According to his statement to the police, a struggle subsequently ensued between him and the deceased, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, leading to her death.
“The suspect has also allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community. These claims are currently being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration by the Command”, Ikenga explained.
The statement further exonerated the landlord of the building who was earlier suspected to have a connection with the killing of the young lady.
It stated that his exoneration followed on going investigation, urging members of the public to disregard any earlier suspicion against him.
Ikenga said the suspect would remain in police custody while the investigation continues, particularly into his alleged involvement in other related criminal incidents.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Nnanna Oji Ama, was full of commendation for the people of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support throughout the investigation.
“He particularly appreciates members of the community who provided timely and useful information that contributed to this significant breakthrough.
“The Commissioner reiterates that the Command will continue to pursue every credible lead in the investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law”, he said.
He reiterated that Anambra State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in policing, and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes do not escape justice.
